Many times with my students I will create a memory game or some type of independent fun activity for the students who finish early. It keeps things fun, but also will give them the answers at the end so you won't have to do any extra work with them.

Google and you'll find this free program. Early finishers are usually the ones who don't need review - looking for a challenge. I allow kids to work together quietly after they have attempted to complete alone. I allow those who "got it" to help others. Comes with answer key so super quick to check - then I send kids back to try and fix - another item in my room that gets updated every Monday morning. Each week we all start over with the new weekly story problems

Search on Pinterest and you'll quickly see lots of samples. My kids love this activity and sometimes 2 early finishers can work together. I don't allow 3 letter words until they find at least 30 larger words. I do allow them to use the dictionary which is a big skill builder in 3rd grade. I award DOJO points at the end of the week so kids keep their work until Friday.

I have an Early Finishers folder that has worksheets and other pages from most of the subjects that I teach. I also have a "play room", and I give them quiet activities to do sometimes when finished. Puzzles, drawing, small art projects, and manipulatives, are various things that I assign for them. It is written on the board for them. I change their choices up every other day. Later in the year, I want to add some file folder games. They will have Science projects, an Animal Notebook, book reports, etc., that will also occupy their days; so I think the items I have available for them now is enough. Hope this helps you, and this is also my 1st time to teach 3rd grade. Learning as I go!

My students have a 'packet' to work on when they finish. It is esentially review work for language arts, math, and handwriting. Each page has math problems, grammar questions, vocabulary, and handwriting. Then every 4th or 5th page there is a text with comprehension questions. I keep an answer key available for them to check their own work when they finish a page. Once corrected, they can go back and make corrections on the page. I don't give them a grade on it, as it is not something I am explicitly teaching at the moment.

There are enough pages in the master packet to give them a page a day, but I just hand out a 10-page packet at a time.

I got the packet from TPT (I think) to use as morning bellwork, but because of a change in our class schedule, we don't have time to do it! I didn't want to waste it because I think it is good practice!

What do you do with early finishers? I don't want to just have them pick up a book each time. I don't want to have them do something that will give me extra correcting either. Ideas? Thanks.
