It can be overwhelming working with kids who have their own mental health issues. Do you do anything in particular to practice self-care? I'm not sure I have the best balance on that. I'd love to hear suggestions (outside of just alcohol ).

Some good ideas in this thread! Thanks! I find I tend to eat, watch movies, read, do puzzles/candy crush, spend time with my kids (playing games usually), and relax with soda I do try to get together with friends, but it seems they are always canceling on me I love the idea of performing acts of kindness.

I know I don't do very well finding time for myself. I think that is why I get so emotional at times at home and work. I feel guilty if I try to take me time, but I also don't like to be totally alone either. About twice a year a co teacher and I will go out for supper, just to catch up on personal lives. I know I need to do better, just haven't found that balance yet. I will say this was better before DH accident. It is like we are starting over in our life because everything is our new normal and we have a long way to go.

I veg on TV, play backgammon, sit on my porch in my rocking chair, and look for people to help with an act of kindness. Otherwise, it is Diet Coke for me. On truly bad days, I go find one of my grandchildren to hug.

Now seriously, I think self-care is very important. I wasn't too aware of it at first, but one of the mental health counselors at my site would ask me about my self-care every week or so and it really made me think about what I do for myself. Now it's more part of my routine.

Here is what I do on a regular basis:
  • play my piano or my guitar
  • go on to Sporcle.com (my favorite website for wasting time)
  • get outdoors and walk with my husband or ride my bike
  • go to the gym
  • do puzzles
  • turn my work email off when I'm on the computer for fun
  • nap
  • see my therapist every other week (I see her for non-work related issues, but just talking about stuff helps.)
I'm curious what other people do!
