I often included visual arts in social studies units. Its fairly easy if you're studying a time period. For example I used artists like Thomas Moran for western expansion. If you're exploring economic issues such as the depression Grant Wood worked well. I think if you google the concept plus visual artists you should find tons of ideas.

I posted similar in the music teachers forum..

I'm searching for a unit of study between the 6th and 12th grade levels that incorporates fine art curriculum (or perhaps visa versa) into the lessons..

I prefer ELA or Social Studies but I will be happy to view anything that is available or something you might be willing to share.
