How long do you give first graders to do 25 fact problems? They are all the same - adding 1's, 2's etc.

This year my first grade team did a "Sundae" themed addition and subtraction fluency activity. We gave our kids 3 minutes to answer 30 questions.

We have to follow 3 seconds to answer each 1 fact to show mastery....so they do 50 facts in 2.5 minutes....well.... trying to!

Can you please tell me the name of the timed math book you mentioned? I think it sounds like something I'd like to start using next year instead of making up my own all the time. Thanks!

I bought a timed math book. Each page/level has 35 problems. I kept adjusting the time until I found a time that most students could complete the page - 2 minutes and 35 seconds. That was around the beginning of the year. Now, most students are done before the time is up. But there are still a few kids who can't finish in that amount of time. One teacher I work with suggested that, if after 2 tries at a certain level the student still doesn't finish, I cut off the last row of problems so they don't get frustrated.

I give my students 30 mixed addition and subtraction problems to complete in 1 minute. I have several who complete all of them sometimes with a few seconds to spare. Many of the problems are easier, but there are some problems like 9 + 5 on the page as well. My students enjoy the challenge and look forward to this everyday.

in one minute. If they know them, they can do it. If they do not have them memorized, then they fail miserably.

I do 15 and I am not super picky about the timing. It usually is about a minute and a 1/2. Otherwise it gets to be really stressful. One of my brightest kids can never finish quickly and that's ok.
