I've found going to sentence level comprehension sometimes is the best place to start. So for example, if the sentence is-Tom is a cat. I ask-Who is Tom? What is the cat's name? I make the question fit the sentence.

If students struggle with this, I go back and look at the vocabulary and ask myself if they understand the words in the sentence. Because it could be they have poor vocabulary skills.

Hello -

I teach in a self-contained classroom. Three of my students are decoding on grade level but have little to no comprehension. They also struggle with expressive language. I am having a difficult time trying to figure out reading comprehension strategies that will work for them.

So far, I've tried having them retell what they've read after each paragraph and we've also done tons of graphic organizers. Anything I'm missing?
