Get a copy of Haistones and Halibut Bones. It's a great book of color poems. My kiddoes love to write color poems. Also try "You Are" poems. You describe a person but don't say who or what they are until the last line. Georgia Heard has great books on teaching poetry to children.

It is my favorite unit to teach! What comes out of them is often quite touching.

I am tutoring a second grad student. I have him write about basketball games and his leggo collection but I would like to if anyone has used had students compose simple poetry successfully?
