K-5 reading specialist with groups including Autism, Behavior Therapy (emotional/mental illness diagnoses), and SPED/LD.

I use my kidney table for most groups, most of the time. I use my rug most for my 1st graders. I prefer the rug for "whole group" comprehension strategy work (my room is tech limited, so I do that on chart paper), and the table for foundational reading skills, guided reading, etc.

One reason I prefer the table is it gives more structure to the physical space. Most of my groups are also 30 minutes and I find that I spend more time dealing with all sorts of nonsense - who is sitting where, who is too close to their neighbor, who has gone from sitting to laying or rolling, who would rather stand, who took someone else's materials, who wants to start looking at materials on the shelf instead of at their work- when the kids are on the floor rather than at the table. This is probably partially because I'm a better manager from the table, and maybe also because some of the classroom teachers don't utilize their rug very often so the kids aren't as used to that = "work", where the kidney table is used throughout the building as a work space.

I teach K -2 mild/moderate and got ride of my kidney table. I either sit on the rug with my kids or sit on stool. My para sits at a table with them for phonics.

I am a K-3 sped teacher and I use the table the vast majority of the time. Like the pp said, it provides more structure. We are also doing some sort of writing in every lesson, and that wouldn't work out too well on the carpet. I also think students in this setting need to be in very close proximity to me- on the carpet if I'm standing/sitting in a chair and they're on the floor, that's not really close enough, and I'd get very uncomfortable sitting on the floor all day long.

I sometimes do read alouds with my K students on the carpet, and when I have any of the kids do partner activities that's a spot they sit in. I do have one group that I have a para with me for- I split the kids in half and they do activities with both of us, switching halfway through the block. I allow her to use the table while I sit on the carpet for that block. Otherwise I don't really use it for instruction.

I am moving from special ed grades 4-5 to special ed grades K-2 next year. I will have kids in my room for 30 minutes at a time during grade level intervention blocks. I will have students with autism, SDD, SLD, and OHI for attention. Do you have your kids sit at a kidney table for instruction or on a carpet? I think the biggest group I will have will be 4 at one time.
