and spray paint them or something...they have a wider base and then use velcro. They wouldn't rip or split either.

Oooohhh Thats a GREAT idea!

Ours were stuck with velcro. When I would let them use colored pencils as a treat, I just pulled that cup up and put the "magic cup" in it's place.

I have some great ideas to try!

I was thinking that too.

some of my co-workers used a bit of this in the bottom of the cup to give it weight and since the desks were in groups, there was a little flag with the identity of the table group.

Last year, I used hot glue on the bottoms of plastic cups. Eventually, they did come off (were pulled/knocked off) and I had to reglue throughout the year. This was more problematic as some kids found the cups a convenient way to hold crayons, glue sticks, etc. which was too heavy.

I got the cups at Dollar Tree in a package of 4 for $1. Maybe I'll try velcro this year too. That is what I attach my nametags on with.

My fear with the marbles is that the kids would want to play with them or "accidentally" tip over the cup.

I had the long skinny kind and put velcro on each end and in the middle. At the end of the day they had to put them in their desk so the desks could get cleaned. They weren't 100% spill proof, but what really is in 2nd grade? lol

The PP said my idea of velcroing the cups to the desk.

I've seen little cups velcroed to desks for pencils, etc. Would that work?

LakeTeacher 07-30-2012 06:05 PM

I am planning to give students a plastic pencil cup to leave on their desks to hopefully avoid them having to dig around in their desks for a pencil, etc. Do any of you fabulous teachers out there have some suggestions as to what I should use in the bottom of the cups to weight them down so they won't spill all of the contents?

I've considered those little flat bags of marbles that you can use in flowerpots and Quick-Crete.

What do you suggest??

Thanks for your help!
