I find better buy-in when I start with something fun. Google for lots of ideas. Sets an upbeat town, and as it's non academic, it serves more as a team building time and allows for latecomers to not miss core stuff. I also have cut back on my time. Shorter is sweeter, so I tell them what we'll be doing, have everything cued up in tabs ready to present, keep the pace going, and try to involve them as much as possible, for best buy in. I'm averaging 16-19 out of 26, which I'm happy with. Some days are better than others. Hang in there!

but the ones who come are a lot of fun. I have something for them to show and talk about at every meeting. They have to mute themselves when they come in, and they raise their hands before they are allowed to unmute themselves.We usually do science activities during our zoom meetings.

My Google Meets are mostly me talking to avatars. I honestly don’t know if they are present. We can’t insist they turn on their cameras, so many don’t. Some do, and some answer questions and share out ideas.

I tried a fun project. Kids complained they didn’t have enough time even though I gave them two weeks. So I gave them another week. They complained they couldn’t do it because their printer didn’t work or whatever, even though I told them to do only what they could with what they had and I’d accept it.

I tried what would have been an interesting lesson in the classroom about vampire bats. I talked to myself for 30 minutes per class, it seemed, and was hoarse afterwards. To the kids it was just one more assignment.

Grades are all going to be credit or no credit anyway. We have 4 more weeks. I’m sure we’d all be happy just to stop the charade right now.

I'm so glad I'm not alone. And i know I'm not, but ...

I do start with a game or two and some time to just chat. Then I go over some issues with past work (like writing adjectives where it says to write adjectives - they all wrote verbs. ) and then going over some math misconceptions. I really try to keep it short and I try not to 'teach' too much. I post videos instead if something needs to be taught.

This will end and we will go on.

I'm in elementary and usually only get a few students at my meetings, however, I try to be understanding. Many of my students don't have internet, or their internet is spotty, at best. Add in parents who don't speak English and parents who are working insane numbers of hours during this (Amazon warehouse) and I'm just happy to have contact with the ones I do. I know most families are doing the best they can during this crisis.



I even had one parent apologize that they weren't doing more, but she is trying to keep them up on their work, while still working away from home. She has an older daughter who helps the younger kids get online, but the daughter has her own work to do, without needing to be responsible for younger siblings.

I just joined a Google Meet and there were only 3 kids out of 25 in the meet. It was fun though.

The kids are done. The teachers are done. The parents are done. We’re all done.

I've found that mine do pretty well with their behavior if I don't talk too much. I've been playing educational videos (like BrainPop) and playing related quizzes or games that let them participate. I also keep our meetings short - less than an hour most days. My attendance has really gone up since I settled into this pattern. I think the kids and parents feel that it's manageable.

Half doesn’t sound too bad to me. I usually get about 10 out of my 80 kids.

I know how you feel. We're only required to do Google meets once a week and I've been averaging 5 kids out of 19. Granted some of my kids don't have internet access but a good number of the ones not showing up do have it. Thankfully, we are not teaching through Google meet and are doing what my superintendent calls asynchonous (sp?) instruction which boils down to us recording ourselves teaching a lesson and then posting it on Google classroom for the students to view when they can.

When I do Google meet, I've been doing more laid back activities like a scavenger hunt or discussing a story. I've had one student chomping on chips the whole time, another randomly leave, a parent yell out "What the hell?", and a pet bird squawking in the background. I really hate this and am praying that we can be back to normal next year but unfortunately it's not looking too good.

Zoom Meetings are a stinking joke for my class. Not even half of them show up and then one by one they leave before it’s over, and they talk during it and the work that they’re doing is pitiful!. I wish I could fast forward through the next three weeks and just be done with this garbage.
