I have had that happen before when donating. They just don't get it in quite right. Sometimes lack of experience, sometimes it's just hard to hit the vein.
One time my arm was really hurting and when I couldn't get the tech's attention, I just yelled out that something wasn't right. That got them running!

When they wrote up the incident report I hope they mentioned that you told them something was not right. Not listening to a patient could be very serious.

So glad you're OK.

Iím frustrated that they didnít listen to you. I hope you start feeling better soon. My DH donates blood often and hasnít had any problems. But DD is different. They want her platelets. Sheís gone twice and has had problems so I donít think sheíll go again.

It sounds like a miserable experience. I have occasionally gotten a huge bruise from the rubber tubing they often use as a tourniquet, or from leak back when I have gotten an IV in the hospital. Once when I had a morphine pump post op my vein kept collapsing with alarms sounding while I was trying to sleep. Other than huge unsightly scars from incisions, those are the extents of my horror stories, thank goodness! I could share a few from my dental procedures, but I won't.
I don't envy you at all. Trying to do a good deed should not result in misery. Hope you're feeling much better very soon.

Things to sometimes happen. My real problem with what happened to you is that when you told the first person there was a problem, they didn't really take you seriously.

I hope you recover quickly. Obviously it's going to be a while for the bruise, but the swelling, light-headedness should be much quicker. Glad they are going to check on you.

Well, that didn't go exactly as planned. I had absolutely no issues the first time other than the migraine I had when I went, but the donation procedure was fine and I felt perfectly normal afterwards. Today I noticed that the needle didn't feel really secure. I told the first person that checked on me my concern and she lifted the gauze that was covering the needle incision and said it looked fine. I said it just felt like it might move and she assured me that there were two pieces of tape holding it in place. As the donation went on my arm began to feel really tight and I was hoping the end was near so they would take the needle out. I just happened to glance at the gauze and could see that my arm looked swollen, so I told nurse. She came, lifted the gauze, saw that my arm had a huge knot the size of an egg above the needle, and said, 'Oh, Lord.' Not exactly what you want to hear!!! Apparently the needle had slipped and the fluids were just entering my arm causing a hematoma. They had to write up an incident report and said I would be getting a call tomorrow to check on me. Also not comforting. I was told there would be a huge bruise- which has started forming- and it is SO sore tonight!! I am alternating heat and ice, but more alarming is that I get really light-headed every time I stand up. I was supposed to be able to go back in 4 weeks, but because of this I have to wait 8 weeks. I will wait and see how this plays out before I decide, but this may have been my second and final donation.
