I have just finished putting together a major poetry unit. I have combined reading and writing with it and I used a lot of things from Ralph Fletcher's Poetry Matters and Poem-Making by Myra Cohn Livingston. They were both very helpful in giving tips for writing free verse.

I will definitely look into the resources you both have mentioned.

Teachr4- how did your unit go?

Regie Routman has a book called 'Kids Poems, Grades 3-4.' It's $15 on Amazon. I've used it and it is a great jumping off point for getting kids in to free verse.

Do you teach poetry reading and writing using free verse? I see this as potentially easier and more meaningful for children to attempt to write, but I don't have a lot in terms of lesson plans. Any suggestions?
