So, do y’all prefer to use one method over the other? Or, do you a combination of the two?

I use Reader's Workshop (mini-lesson and conferencing), guided reading, and Daily 5.

Students use the Daily 5 while I am conferencing and doing guided reading.

Please get the Daily 5 book by The Sisters. The directions for how to implement it are very helpful, and very step-by-step.

The Sisters also have a very helpful website.

If you look on the home page of this site, you will find a Daily 5 listing under "Topics of Interest."

Daily 5 includes:
--read to self (independent reading).
--read with a partner. Students read with a partner from their guided reading group using guided reading materials. This works on fluency.
--respond to reading...Students in my class respond to their independent reading or guided reading text in a spiral notebook. The subject of these responses is usually linked to the mini-lesson taught during Reader's Workshop. Students respond about two or three times per week. I read one-fifth of the responses each day and use a rubric to score the work. I do lots of modeling on what these responses should look like during the mini-lesson.
--word study...My school uses Words Their Way.
--listen to reading.

While students are doing Daily 5, I have guided reading groups and conferences.

RW means students choose their reading materials. Teachers conference and keep track of progress with anecdotal notes. Often a minilesson and read alouds are a part too. There are lots of variations.

Daily 5 includes 5 different ways to read ( independently, to someone, guided with teacher and I forget the other ones)

What is the difference between teaching using the Workshop method and using the Daily 5?
