I was in grad school when NCLB came out. In the one class we analyzed NCLB and other supporting documents. I wrote the only dissenting paper on NCLB in the class. Professor asked to meet with me regarding it. She couldn't understand why I wasn't all in with NCLB. In the end she said it was well thought out and written but not to mention it in a job interview.

When I got my first teaching job the principal told me "it's the student's right to fail." Several years later the principal, now a superintendent, is quoted in the newspaper saying "we're not in the business of failing students." The difference? he was a principal before NCLB; a superintendent after NCLB came out.

I completely understand where youíre coming from - itís a popular blame game. I like to make sure to refer to these as ďour kids,Ē because Iím an EL teacher, but they have another teacher (or many in jh), too! Iím not the ONLY one responsible for their learning!

Our ďunderperformingĒ subgroups last year were our SPED and EL. Iím like - these students are SPED FOR A REASON. You canít expect them to be on grade level, no matter how hard they work or how hard you teach. A learning disability means the capability isnít there for whatever reason.

As an EL teacher myself, I moved back to junior high last year and fielded many questions about why our ELs couldnít seem to hit targets. My only response was - there was no EL teacher here for two years. Theyíve been left to their own devices with no support...did you really expect them to blow the tests out of the water with no supports?

Our other push is ďnot dumbing it downĒ for ELs or SPED. I hate that phrase by the way. According to our curriculum person, they should be getting exactly what every kid is getting - yep, letís stick a newcomer into a fifth grade class working on Engage New York...thatís so smart!

Lets give them a chance to settle in and learn some basic English first!

The "teachers are not good enough" mindset (perfect use of the latest popular movement) is a best seller. It makes tons of money for the pd providers and brings in federal money to districts. This never ending cycle of screw the teachers will never end until leaders , not hired by politics, get smart.

That stinks! And meantime, don't forget about the behavior issues, kids with trauma, the aggressive behaviors causing anxiety in the other kids in the classroom that might be taking away from instructional time or their readiness to learn. REALLY frosts my cookies when they dump all over teachers about "poor" data

Grrrr. Still recovering from our literacy PD. Apparently we specialists, Sped and ELL, are not working hard enough with our students, nor are the classroom teachers, to move "the needle forward" on the test scores of our non-developmentally, non- differentiated state assessment tests. It's all because we haven't taught our children good reading strategies - we aren't rigorous - we don't set high standards. Of course they didn't say which grades (elementary, high school, what???) were responsible for this data. It's all grades, they say.

Most of our sped and ELL students cannot read "grade level" materials.....but the stinkin' test isn't even written at grade level -- it's above grade level and extremely long and tiring.

It was so discouraging and maddening to hear this nonsense.
