I hear ya. We won't get scores until mid August, but I doubt we'll make AYP. That 67% proficient is tough to reach for all sub groups, especially Spec Ed and EL. The infamous hockey stick is going to put all Title 1 schools in Needs Improvement within 3 years, unless something changes.

I figure I do my best (my classes typically score 70+ proficient with about 40% EL and 10% spec Ed) and am always looking for ways to improve practice. The test is just one measure and I will not teach to it. I will prep, but use standards, not tests as my measure...At least until it is part of my evaluation.

This happens to many schools that have done well in the past.It's how the math works under NCLB. Just remember one test does not tell you or the kids how much progress they and you made.That is what matters. It's sad because now the powers that be will tell the teachers to change yet again what they are doing

I was given paperwork from a conference from our local reading series that had the AYP acronym..they told us it was Annual Yearly Progress and also had it written out in the paperwork...NOW being teachers we had to ask..doesn't Annual and Yearly mean the same thing??? Yes it does, but the instructor had no answers for this...After much research..it has been discovered that AYP has been misinterpreted...to my knowledge it's suppose to be AYP= adequate yearly progress...doesn't this just make more since??? I think so...

I teach in a good suburban school where our pass rates are mid to upper 90s percent in all subjects. However next year we will probably not meet AYP because of our high special ed population not meeting the AYP standard. It seems crazy that we will be considered a school that needs improvement.

We had someone come speak to the staff at the beginning year and she basically said in 2 years every school, even the suburban "good" schools will be in a Needs Improvement status because it will be impossible to meet the ever increasing targets, especially in the subgroups. I find it ridiculous that the powers that be want teachers to differentiate the instruction to meet every learners needs but then give every learner the same test. Why not differentiate the test to meet every learner where they are at.

Just remember, "one size does not fit all". State tests aren't fair measures. You are a good teacher and did the best you could. In my eyes, you didn't fail at all!

So sorry. We will not get the scores until around June 15th. What state are you from? I hate testing!!!!

Are you from Indiana? Is this the ISTEP? I am so nervous to get my classes' results as well. I know they tried so hard. Last year was my first year in the classroom and fortunately my class did well...but I just have this sense of impending doom about this year. I really empathize with you because I know how hard it is to work on all the areas necessary only to be disappointed. Hope your summer goes better. Take care.

sorry to hear. it's only a matter of time until the number of schools not making AYP reaches an all-time high. when everyone will have to reach 100% the lawmakers might actually realize that laws might need to change. (although i'm sure there will be plenty of teacher-bashing before that actually occurs.)

I'm so sorry to hear that.... I've been there before. Last year in fourth grade I worked my ass off in math with my students, and my class was the only one that didn't show the kind of improvement they wanted. It really sucked.

I'm sorry. I know how frustrating those tests can be for the teachers and students. It's only going to get worse from now on. AYP = adequate yearly progress

We were there last year too. But now this year our scores are looking much better. Hopefully next year will be better for you. You just can't control what the tests look like and how the kids do, beyond doing your best to prepare them.

Sorry to hear that--it must be frustrating especially when you have a school in a harder area socio-economic wise. I was just wondering-what does AYP mean? (I'm Canadian - just wondering what kind of effect not making the tests has). Hang in there!

We failed all our state tests. We did okay in reading but not good enough. We are not going to make AYP for the first time in almost forever. It happened one other time a long time ago and most of those teachers are no longer there. Everyone is so disappointed and upset. We worked so hard and it doesn't show! Of course all the other schools in the area did well, so we look like the slackers.

Just so bummed out...

Oh..and it isn't b/c the kids didn't work hard..they took their time (for the most part), used their strategies, used their brains (a new concept to a few, lol)...Luckily we don't tell them they get their scores in the mail this summer.
