I am working on 5th grade pacing and assessments for next year. I am wanting to assess their understanding for academic vocabulary in science and I was just curious as to how everyone assessed vocabulary. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, frayer for a whole unit would be ugly— for students and grading. How about assess 1 word or a choice of 2 words with the frayer model and then plickers the rest? Perhaps that would be a little more authentic, but do-able. I may try that myself.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've use Plickers and love them. I am wanting to do something a little more authentic, the frayer model might work, but that's a lot of work for one entire unit of vocab.

I will be new to teaching 5th grade this year, but have some experience in this grade in content mastery and substituting. I have taught mostly 3rd and 4th grades, but I love using Plickers for quick assessments. It's a free app and is very simple to use. you just print the answer cards and scan the kids' answers for each question. I always lightly write the letter for answer choices on each edge of the plicker answer card, so the students won't get confused about which way to hold the card when they are ready to answer.

I love using plickers - grades are compiled automatically and if you choose, you can give the kids automatic feedback (without exposing individual answers)

Also, if someone is absent, you can always copy and paste your questions for them to answer paper/pencil. I have even made a paper/pencil copy for kids to fill out before our plickers session, just so I have a paper copy to send home. This can also be a good practice for students who need the question right in front of them.

One other tip is that you can have a practice session of silly questions or make the first question a freebie to ensure everyone understands how to use the plickers card accurately.

Another way I like to assess is using DMAC--if your district uses this, you can make your own questions.

A couple other assessment ideas are: Have students write about the vocabulary terms to explain them, or have them complete a frayer model as an assessment (I usually use the frayer model for practice, but no reason it couldn't be used for assessmment.) These ideas would be a little too time consuming for more than 1 or 2 vocabulary words, though.
