Do not under estimate the power of picture books to also help address SS content. Picture books are excellent for mentor texts. I have done some training on this at conferences and at a large district in Texas. I will be doing a presentation in Iowa in June on this topic as well. I am very passionate about integration because it helps to really connect the learning for students.

I agree--use the SS book as much as possible for your nonfiction reading. I have been integrating ELA and SS for the last 20 years and I learned that some days you just can't get to it all so you pick and choose. It all balances out.

I have found the best way is to use as much of the Social Studies text as your non fictional reading as possible. Also, historical novels are another way to integrate SS into that time. I also create a standing SS station that my kids work on throughout the week. Hopefully this helps 😃

Hi all,
I have recently switched districts and will start this next year as a 6th ELA/Writing/SS teacher. I am new to the idea of having a 90 minute integrated ELA/SS/Writing block ... I have always had two different blocks for these subjects. I am struggling to figure out how to manage the 90 minutes when we have so many standards for all three of those subjects and such a short amount of time.

Has anyone had experience with an integrated curriculum like this? I have used the method of balanced literacy in the past and it worked very well and my students excelled in reading. I don't know if I can still do a form of balanced literacy in this integrated classroom with social studies.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
