I am also new to fifth grade and we use the Eureka curriculum. Does anyone have any advice or resources they'd like to share? I understand that there is a learning curve from the traditional math, but honestly looking at the lesson plans confuse me and I hate to have to get evaluated from my principal looking like I don't know anything!!

I just went to a training for this math program. Engage New York just turned into Eureka Math. So the name went away but the program did not. it is transitioning. The Engage site will still be there but will not be updated etc. But I think that you can get the lessons etc for free from Eureka, but the printed materials will cost. I think it cost $12,000 for our K-6 school to get materials including manipulatives. Eureka is the same program as Engage New York.

I'm being pulled into using it this year, but dragging my feet on it. Curious to know more about it being on it's way out. Any more info you can give me? What's taking its place?

I'm new to fifth, but just left a second grade position that used Engage NY. Singvogel gave a pretty accurate assessment. Parents also had quite a learning curve at first. But it grows on you.

I looked at it and discussed it with my principal. She is pretty up on the pulse of education. Her question when I enquired about using it was - Even though it's on its way out? Obviously, I dropped it.

I talked to some 3-4 teachers who used it. They mentioned that it's hard at first, has a steep learning curve for tradition teachers, and presupposes skills students don't have. On the plus side, they said that persistence with the program did result in better problem-solving and in-depth thinking from students.
