I do not use numbers.

I mark everything with first name, last initial.

I use last name so that when we do something like a sound-off, it's in record-keeping order.

If I get a new student, I insert that student into the existing line-up by adding a letter 1, 2, 3, 3a, 4, 5... That way, the students don't have to change their numbers.

I use last name but don't reorder if students leave or arrive later.

I use number the students based on their last names and I use them for everything. (I don't change them if a student moves or I get a new student, the point is just to have numbers.) For example, all students texts have a label with their number on them, binders have numbers, glue has numbers, permission slips have the numbers written on them, it just makes life easier.

Hope it helps!

I no longer use numbers for anything other than their book boxes, but when I used them for turning in homework, I went in order by their last names. It helped whenever they needed to line up in ABC order. Knowing their numbers just made it faster.

I wanted to know how to use numbers in my classroom with identifying students. Do you go by first or last names or out of order? I'm planning to use this for their cubbies, homework, gradebook, tongue depressers, name plates, etc.
