Book check-out
I have a completely fixed schedule about 28 classes a week for 45 minutes each time. I was do you handle book circulation/check-out time? Previously, I would teach a mini-lesson, give students their independent practice piece then allow for other students to get books and rotate. So, during independent practice half at a time would get books then sit down to finish. I had to do it like this because it was too much with all of them up at one time.

Now at my new school they used to teach the lesson and do independent practice in the 30 minute slot then allow book checkout for 15 minutes. At first I tried it my original way, but the kids struggled with working during that time when others were checking out books and some never came back to finish.

Then I was thinking about it...if I continue to do it the old way I always need something for the kids to do while others are checking out books. After some book that I read aloud we may just have a discussion. I hate that they always needed to complete some worksheet or computer activity while others are checking out.

Any thoughts?

Book check out time
For my 3rd-5th grade students that can't cheek out look at an I Spy or a magazine. If we have anything special going on like March BOOK Madness, they can participate in that during checkout. My 2nd graders can look at I Spy books. My Kindergarten and 1st grade students look at books that I have checked out from the public library in a special section or they watch a book on Tumblebooks.

I have found letting kids on the computers for typing games, code, research, etc. as a checkout option was a nice helper, they were less likely to cause trouble.
