phonics

does anyone teach phonics in third grade? How do you test? Do you grade the test? We do not teach spelling anymore and the third graders this year can't spell!!

We have the Fountas and Pinell Word Study program. I use that with most of my class.

I don't give a spelling test, but rather see if they can apply the skill we have learned. For example, when we learned about ck or k at the end of a word, I gave students the beginning of a word and they had to use either ck or k depending on the beginning.

I do have some very proficient spellers and I use Words Their Way with them.

We use Reading Horizons for phonics instruction. It is a multisensory approach with daily dictation. There are suggested dictation words that we use at the end of the week for our weekly test.
