6 Traits for 1st Grade
Hi All,
I recently went to a training on the 6 traits and now I'm trying to piece together a plan to get it off the ground in my classroom. I teach first grade and am really excited to put together a "vision" for the year. Just wondering if anyone has any advice for me while I sketch out my plans? Maybe some sites you visit with ideas for mini lessons? A pacing guide of your own you can share that I can use a springboard? Resources you use and are willing to share?
Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Did you have the Smekens training? They recommend taking either 6 or 12 days(one day per trait or 2....I'm doing 2!) and introduce each trait briefly maybe with a read aloud and then the song?

I'm combining that with No More I'm Done's suggestion of a 10 minute quiet write with music. Everyone dates their work and writes! We did that today for the first time and they loved it....haven't looked at the writing yet, but it isn't necessary to do a rubric or have any expectations at all...simply an introduction.

I link most of the traits to literature. There is a site(which I have in school) based in Neveda that made a book with each of the traits and the books that you can use to teach the trait. As soon as i get to school tomorrow I'll put the info on here. This was a great help.

I teach first grade and have been using the six traits. So far so good. I use a combo of Lucy Calkins and No More I'm Done. No More I'm done has books listed to go with the traits. I have each of the traits listed and I have made some posters to go along with the traits. During Writing conferences I focus on one skill to improve and use trait colored pencils to dot the lines that need fixing. For example, if we discussed starting with a capital, I would grab a conventions colored pencil and dot the lines of sentences where that child forgot to start with a capital. I would then make that a goal for them. This means that before they can sign up for conferences again, they need to make sure they have checked for that particular item. They walk away with the gaol sheet on one side and the writing menu on the other. Then I send them off to fix it with the colored pencil. I am new to this site and am not sure how to attach documents, but if you are interested I can attach the writing menu that I am currently using. I have also made trait labels to put on the kids papers that will be going home so they know what they used well and what they still need to work out. I figured it is more beneficial to focus on one thing rather than to mark up the entire page.

Here is what I have so far. My computer died (of course) and I lost the most precious menu that I worked hours and hours on. I have a copy so I will have to scan it and make it a pdf.

Is there a way to attach more than one per post?

This is an

adapted version of something that I saw for older children from Really Good Stuff. Their kit comes with trait pencils that are used for conferencing. I did not create this, but I did alter/adjust it for the needs of a first grade classroom.
