I teach third grade. The district I work in uses the Lucy Calkins units of study to teach the students how to write. I find that the students are unable to write at this point of the year and for whatever reason when I teach the strategies for personal narratives, there is maybe 5 kids in the whole class that get it. I spend plenty of time launching and discussing what writer's workshop is and how it looks. However, the students are not writing clear stories that make any sense. I feel like a failure, but want to do what my district is asking of me. Can someone help me? Give me advice? Maybe offer a great sight or book that helped you figure it out? I just want to be able to conference with a student and actually see most of the class writing a clear story. Thanks!
