writing traits and curriculum maps

I teach 3rd grade and our curriculum maps are specific about genre we should be teaching every 6 weeks.

1-Personal Narrative
2-Persuasive Letter
3-Fairy Tale
4-How-To Article
5-Realistic Fiction
6-Research Report

Do you think it's a good idea to mix this with the 6 Traits? I don't think the students would get confused because the genres and the actual traits are very different. I was thinking I could break the Traits up to follow the Units too. Any ideas?

You could although

I would make sure to emphasize that the traits are not completed or looked at in isolation; however, you could just focus on one particular trait for that genre. For example:

1-Personal Narrative = voice
2-Persuasive Letter = word choice
3-Fairy Tale = ideas
4-How-To Article = organization
5-Realistic Fiction = sentence fluency
6-Research Report = conventions

Just a suggestion off the top of my head. You might find other combos work better for you. I like the idea - it allows you to focus students' attention on one trait at a time, which might be a lot easier for your students to understand and manage.
