Texas teachers-There are 3 teachers in my grade level, 4th grade. Two of us have an ESL certification and one doesnít. My district does not allow the teacher without the ESL certification to teach ESL students. My campus has decided to try departmentalization in 3-5 grade due to testing. Can someone give me an idea of how this is supposed to work? Principal wants one teacher to teach reading, the other writing/grammar, and the last one math. Is this possible? I need some input. Thanks.

We were required to get ESL certification even though I don't teach at a school that has many English Language Learners. The principal should request that the teacher take the exam. Otherwise maybe there is a temporary waiver until they can take and pass the test.

Thank you for your reply. I hadn't thought about an emergency EEL certification. I'll mention it to the our principal.

I departmentalized with three teachers a few years ago. We had one teacher that taught Reading and Social Studies. It was easy to tie in Reading Standards with Social Studies. Another teacher taught Writing/Grammar. I taught Math and Science.

Usually, if one teacher on the team is certified you will be alright. The ESL students must be serviced by a certified teacher. They donít have to be with one all day.

That's what I thought, but my district has other ideas. They are wasting their resources with their way of thinking. Also, the bilingual teacher is stuck with 3 tests in 4th. Yikes!!
