Monsters for 4th graders?

Hi. I've used a Monster theme for the past two years with 4th graders. I never get a clear pic. of whether they like it or not and my room is not immersed with the monster theme. Students make their own monster and use it to keep track of their AR points. The welcome board is monsters. I give out monster bookmarks and read books/poetry about monsters at the beginning of the year.

Every summer I second guess the theme because I'm worried it may be too juvenile for 4th graders. I love monsters and think crazy monsters are so imaginative. Monster can look like anything you want and are colorful!

So, PTers...should I move on to a new, "older" theme this year? I want my students to enjoy our room and feel comfortable and not babied, but I want to have fun!

Thanks!

Idea

I would keep them because a theme is a big investment. Like you said they are colorful. But, I would add to the idea. What about monsters like Frankenstein and Swamp Thing? What about all the different witches in Disney fairy tale movies? If you can add these they will make a great literature connection when you discuss antagonist in stories. Just an idea to think about. It might be a little more grown up and mature viewpoint of monsters.

Monster Theme

Hi! I'm also going to incorporate monsters into a theme; however, I was thinking about the theme being more "Out of this World". This way I can use the furry monsters (aliens), rocket ships, and stars. If you have any ideas, I would love to hear them. TIA

I heart monsters

I started teaching fourth grade last year after doing a stint in third for a while. With my fourth graders I did a monster theme and incorporated green and purple colors in with it. The kids loved it. I had them create their own monster and then collected them. Each week I put one up somewhere in the classroom. They liked that and searching for the new one as well. I used furry boas in my color theme and put them around the bulletin boards. I am excited to get back.
