Fountas and Pinnell Testing
 
How many here use this test and test to hard? Do you get testing days with a sub? How many days are spent on testing?

We do Fountas and Pinnell testing 3 times a year.
 
The thing about F&P is that the books are very long. You have to have the kids read the whole book so you can do the comprehension part. It's important to be strict about the words they read. They have to read the words exactly--not just a form of the word. And you have to be very strict about the comprehension part.
We get a sub for a day and a half, but that's only enough to test about 12 kids. We do our lowest kids first and then do our higher kids in the classroom during reading block. They are lest distractible.

I test when I think kids are ready to move to next level. So for my lowest kids thatís about once a month. Officially we have to do it 3 times a year.

Since I do it so often, I can easily do a few kids each week.

Early level books are short; get longer after level H. But they stay longer at the higher levels so not necessary to do it monthly

We do it in January and May. It is an involved process but our reading specialist performs the assessments. Although I perform running records with each student, the benchmark provides me with a much better understanding of each student as readers. I have performed benchmarks with my students but I always like having other professionals check in with them too.

My thoughts F&P
 
I currently use this assessment. My school requires it. I think it is valuable and a great tool to make sure you are meeting the needs of your students in reading groups. It allows you to teach on a level that is best for the students.

I would pair it with Jan Richardson's Next Steps to Guided Reading book to help you set up your groups and appropriately teach each group level.

Also, you will want a supplemental assessment for phonemic awareness and phonics. You may not accurately judge students in these two areas, based on the F & P alone. Phonemic awareness is the biggest building block for reading ability, you'll want to fix any holes students may have as a reader before they can move on quickly with the reading levels.
