Mass

I need an engaging lesson that will teach about estimating and mass. It doesn't have to be hands on..they will have a lab. Maybe a great book or interactive website? TIA

Make a Balance Scale

There is some material at Brain Pop (http://www.brainpopjr.com/math/measu.../grownups.weml). It suggests making a crude balance scale but does not include instructions on the construction. Filth Wizardry shows how to make 2 types of balance scales from recycled material at http://www.filthwizardry.com/2009/09...ng-scales.html. A playground seesaw illustrates the principle, but you may not have one and there are concerns about overweight students and keeping everyone on task. You might be able to work it in if someone could pull a few students at a time.

math olympics

An old AIMS or GEMS unit had a math olympics with various metric activities. In one the students "grabbed" marbles (I think). They had to guess the mass and then measure it. They subtracted the actual amount and the estimate. The one closest to their guess was the winner.
