Graphs

What tips do find most helpful for teaching graphs (bar graphs, pictographs, line graphs) to students who are not visual learners?

Put them in the graph

Start simple by having the students arrange themselves in a line by height. Take a picture. Make plain paper copies and have them create a bar chart by drawing rectangles around each person and labeling each rectangle with the person's initials. For a little more useful graph, have them arrange themselves by birth month. Each month group completes their part of a pictograph on the board. I've also had kids use ones and tens blocks to build a true 3D bar graph.

Thanks, a human graph sounds like a really fun lesson!

And I think I'll try the blocks, too.

Anyone else? - especially tips to give individual students struggling with homework that reqires reading graphs and answering questions.
