Small Moments
I am teaching the small moments unit and most of the students are doing well. There are a few who just continue to struggle with thinking of small moments despite my modeling, reading student samples, reading mentor authors, and conferring. Any suggestions? These students either don't remember or just don't have a lot of moments.

Focus on a school moment if possible. First day of school in younger years. (Have them focus on the butterflies or not being able to eat their breakfast. Sometimes I am forced to use my rushed mornings and telling them how spilling my tea is sometimes enough! Do you use the watermelon strategy? That helps my kids a lot.

Watermelon strategy
What is a watermelon strategy?

After a vacation, for example,
we talk about how we had a whole watermelon of stories happen. Then, we "crack open" the melon, and think of all of the seeds inside. The challenge for us, as writers, is to focus on one seed, one small story that happened. That will be the topic of a story for writing.
This year, recently, I used the idea of pumpkin seeds instead, since we had counted pumpkin seeds earlier in the year.
