Best professional development book for reading teachers?
Hello! I am a 20 year veteran third/first grade teacher getting my reading certification while on sabbatical this year. My current course is asking me to plan and facilitate a professional book discussion group with colleagues. I would greatly welcome what you Title I teachers suggest as valuable resource books in your field! Much thanks for your suggestions!

Is this a hypothetical assignment, or are you actually going to be leading the book study? If so, are there literacy areas that your staff would be more interested in, or maybe topics that they could use work in? I am an obsessive reader of professional books, so if you have a topic in mind, I might know of something.

One that I like that is easy to read and has lots of great actionable recommendations is "Who's Doing the Work: How to Say Less So that Readers Can Do More" by Jan Burkins and Amy Yaris. I work at a school with a large ELL and refugee population so it is really easy for our teachers to fall into the habit of doing all of the thinking and work for the kids. This is a great resource for how to increase independence and accountability for students in all areas of literacy instruction.

David Kilpatrick
Currently, I'm reading David Kilpatrick's books about phonological awareness. It is research-based information and how to apply it to everyday practice.

His two books are:

Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties (available on Amazon). This is his researched-based book. This would be good for a book study (but fair warning - it is not a quick, easy read).

Equipped for Reading Success (available at is the accompanying phonemic awareness program that Kilpatrick developed based on the results of the research. This is more of a teacher's manual to implement lessons, but it also includes some of the information in his other book.

Good luck getting your reading certification!

The previous Title 1 teacher gave me a book they studied last year. It's called
A Fresh look at Phonics by Wiley Blevins. It also says Common Causes for Failure and 7 ingredients for success.

She didn't really say anything about it and I haven't cracked it yet so I know that doesn't help<!--eyebrow--> but just an idea.

I ordered the book, Vet3Teacher!
The title intrigued me so I ordered it! I'll let you know what I think after I'm into it! ;)

Great! I haven't opened it yet as it was last year's Title 1 book, but I will as soon as I start getting my own groups.
