1st grade AU touching privates
This situation seems to be getting worse each day from noon on, to include vigorous activity especially during special areas and in gen ed. He is frequently removed from any time he has in gen ed due to this behavior and brought to the Learning Center where he screams and cries to go back to class and see his friends. He will hit teachers and scream. Of course, anything that breaks the schedule is very upsetting to him. This could be something like he forgot his hat or someone is in his swing. The student has over 1000 minutes SPED. Parent reports lots of activity at home when watching TV and night time in general. He has social stories, visuals on his desk (Hands on Desk) and we are trying to keep these busy hands occupied. He has very little focus to produce work independently, needs constant prompts. He is reading above grade level. I am getting soooo many strong complaints from teachers, I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

Admittedly, I haven't heard of this being used with a child this young, but I know some who teacher teens with AU will sometimes use this "private" activity as a reward for completing tasks (time alone in the bathroom). From their reports, it's done with parent approval and has helped curb inappropriate behaviors and increased on-task behavior (to get the reward). I know you said he's reading above grade level, but I'm not sure if he has a strong understanding of this type of delayed gratification, but it may help him to begin to control some of these impulses when he knows he'll get to do that in a bit, once he finishes a task. The people who have used it with older kids have slowly increased the time required on task before earning the reward.

I thought it was crazy when I first heard it (and one teacher laughingly told me they had a heck of a time deciding on the appropriate pecs pic to use to symbolize the reward activity<!--eyebrow-->), but they had great success with this in middle and high school. Don't know if it's an option for you, but it sounds like nothing is as rewarding to him as this activity of his, so if you can use that to your advantage, you might have better luck. (If nothing else, parents could sure try that at home!)

Oh, and I'm assuming you mean his own privates and never someone else's- that, of course, would be extremely inappropriate as a reward!

Thank you for that idea, I'll have to think on that. Yes, touching his "own" privates from the outside of his pants. Truthfully, the kids hardly notice it. It's the teacher's that are so upset! I would like for them to calm down and not reinforce it. It's extra pressure on me when they are getting upset and shaking their heads, saying things like "the teachers next year are not going to put up with this." This student has displayed more AU behaviors in the past 3-4 months. He used to talk a lot more and now it's constant self-talk (he has memorized cartoon scripts) and ecolaila. So sad.
