beginning of year writing assessment

I teach 3rd grade. I bought a book that I really like that provides journal prompts and lessons on the different types of writing and is set up to start in September. I think this is great because that gives me August to assess writing and work on brushing up sentences and paragraphs before getting into the "heavy stuff." Does anyone have a good way to assess writing during the first week of school like "Write a sentence about ____." Write a paragraph about ________. I hope this makes sense. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you!

Book Title?

I also teach third grade. I would love to hear the title of the writing book you bought. I am always looking for writing help.
