Poetry and Book Summary

My 6th grade Literature class is currently reading the novel The Watsons Go To Birmingham. We are writing 5 different types of poems in celebration of National Poetry Month. The content for each of the types of poems is whatever chapter we're reading.
As a culminating assessment I'd like to have my students work in groups to compose a poem that summarizes the book. My thinking is to have 7 groups of 3 so that each group can compose 1 stanza. I want the result to be a ballad about the book. We are memorizing "Ballad of Birmingham". It's a serious ballad about the bombings (as you probably know); I'd like to make this ballad a funny yet serious ballad. I've never done this before so I am needing execution ideas. Is this an effective idea or is it too much?
