Young Student
What would your school do if a new student enrolled and he missed your cutoff date (his old school had a later date)? All of the students that are his age are in kindergarten instead of first grade. Would it make a difference if the student had an IEP?

My district won't allow kids to enter kinder or first unless they meet the age cut-off date (Sept 1st). Previous schooling and IEP's don't matter. We had a problem with parents enrolling their kids in early-entry private kindergartens to skirt the Sept. first rule, so now they're very strict. Starting in 2nd grade, they can enter early as long as they have proof of successfully completing the previous grade.

I believe ours transfers them in at the grade they've been attending. So if they came from a district that started earlier and they were already in first, and then moved mid-year, they would be enrolled in first.

An IEP would actually work against trying to hold them back, because it would be assumed that any issues were related to the disability rather than immaturity.

Thanks for the replies! It would make more sense if we at least had a statewide cutoff date but I guess each district sets their own date. I have students over a year older than this little guy.
