Word Walls
I do have a bulletin board with a word wall on it, but each kid has the same word wall in their desk glued to a file folder. I got all my words and activities from a great book called "Month by Month Phonics for Third Grade" by Patricia Cunningham. It has a handout that includes each month's new words on the word wall. I found that most kids preferred to just take their mini word wall out of their desk when we were doing activities with them instead of looking at the bulletin board. Perhaps, if you have limited space, you can just have them use the one in their desk.

That's a great idea---I like the idea of using a file folder!! What is the template like that you glue into the folders?

Could you assign a different color for each subject and combine letters? For example the first section would be A-C words. On strips of yellow paper write science words for the current unit, use light blue for reading, etc. As you finish each unit replace with vocabulary for the new unit.

Word Wall
What about closet doors? My wall space is limited as well but I have 4 large coat closet doors that I have placed the letters of the alphabet on and we just add words as we go. I put border around the doors, but no paper on them.

I have one....
closet, but the kids can't see it from their seats or anywhere else in the room--- it is kinda like a closet hallway that leads to the door.
But, I like your idea-- just won't work in my situation.

Look up!
Can you put items on the ceiling? It's unique and catches kids' attention. I would also have a portable one for them. We use the Fry lists for our word walls.

Window Shades
My school is very old. We have large windows with old shades. So, we staple fadeless paper over the shades, covering enough area to still be able to move the shades part way up and down. Then we make each window a word wall for an individual subject: science, social studies, math, and ELA.
