word work activities

Hi! I have used D5 with third and fourth graders very successfully. Last year was my first year in first and D5 just fell apart on me. I was too nervous to trust that class to work independently and accomplish anything. As a result I was overwhelmed with worksheets to grade and my poor kiddos spent too much time doing busy work!
This year I am determined to make this model work!!
2 Questions- I have the book from 2006, is it worth it to buy the 2nd edition?
and
what types of word work activities do you suggest for 1st graders? I know my 3rd and 4th graders practiced spelling and word wall words with scrabble tiles, stamps and rainbow writing. that much I remember...
Thanks so much in advance for any help!!

I used...

wiki stix, magnet letters on baking sheets (all from Dollar Tree), and play-doh, whiteboard writing, and plus I inherited a bunch of word puzzles that I use. I try to do as few worksheets as possible-less grading for me, more fun (which means more focus) for them.
I have not done D5 in a couple years, not by choice, but I am ready to get back to it this year! Good luck!

Magnetic letters, letter stamps, letter tiles, chalkboard, whiteboard, pebbles, play doh, were a few of the items I used in second grade. Absolutely no worksheets to correct! I really think you are fine with the first edition.

word work

I know it can be time consuming but if you go to Pinterest and search daily 5 word work you will find tons of great ideas!! I'm loving daily 5 is another good board to follow.

Book changes

I only have the second edition. My understanding is that they have made changes to the original and they also address Math 3. I also ordered the CAFE book. After reading both books, I feel more than ready to incorporate both the Daily 5 and Math 3. I also received a DVD with the cafe book that has all the forms and files for getting started. A worthy investment!

Deep breath!

It's hard, but it works!

I read the 2006 edition, and it is close to the new edition, but not exact, it has a lot of "after experience" advice that they learned after teachers tried it out in their classrooms. I would first recommend checking around to see if you can borrow the book or check it out from the library.

I'd recommend a lot of the same things that you did with your older kids for the first grade. I do rainbow writing, stamps, plastic letters, "read it, build it, write it" and the like with my kindergartners.
I know the first grade teacher also has some activities that involve sorting words alphabetically from the word wall.
Write around the room is also a LOT of fun for the little kids.
