It gets better right?

Hi! So I am a first year teacher and today was my first day with Daily 5. I feel like it was a nightmare. I felt like my kids were naughty and we really didn't learn anything but instead we just wasted 90 precious minutes. I have heard how everyone loves Daily 5 but as of now I'm not feeling the love... Oh and did I mention all of my students are ESL? Please help! I need some sort of inspiration to keep going with this Daily 5

I'm "just a sub" but I was under the impression that you don't just dive into Daily 5, you have to teach the students the routine, the transitions, and the behavior expectations. If your kids were naughty, was it because they did not know these things?

I agree with the above post. You need to let them build up stamina. Not sure what grade level you are, but 90 minutes for any grade level seems pretty long for the first day.

Me too.

I got this group of students 10/9 and they are all SpEd.

For the past 6 weeks or so, I have been teaching them routines, building stamina, having mini lessons on the CAFE components and choosing the activities myself until now.

We reviewed all the T charts and everything yesterday and looked at how it all worked together. Then today, we (they) "chose" their 3 choices themselves for the first time. Overall, it was pretty amazing.

It was not without a few hiccups but I was more than satisfied.

Okay yes we have practiced the routines and they have had it in previous grades. We did much better today and the previous day. Thank you all for your advice. I will continue to work on building their stamina more! Thanks!

One tiny piece of advice (and believe me, I learn just about everything the HARD way.....) is the more work you put into the upfront teaching of D5 behaviors and expectations, practicing what it does and doesn't look and sound like, etc, the better the rest of the year will go. I guess the ideal is having the kids do what they're supposed to do even when you're not watching.

Glad your day went better. Best of luck!

Do you have the Sister's book?

If you don't have this book, you need it and need to read how you just do a little bit of Daily 5 and the practicing each day. Look for " Daily 5 for Dummies" . It's on this site and the internet. It helped me a lot. It's well worth sticking it out. Best framework I've ever used. Good luck!😊
