Celebration

I have tried every trick in the book and worked so hard with one of my babies to learn letter names and sounds. She just didn't really have any prior experiences to help build any foundation before she came to me. She is still failing miserably by all the benchmarks we are held to, but I am so excited today! She started in August knowing 0 letters and 0 sounds. It has been hard, hard work for her and she now knows 19 letters and 7 sounds. Nearly all of that has happened in the last couple of weeks. I am hoping she's headed for full snowball effect and going to quickly grow by leaps and bounds. She isn't so, so low compared to other students I have had, but everyone else in my classes this year walked through the door knowing most letter names. She's just so far behind where her classmates are and she knows it. I want her to catch up before she feels frustrated and defeated! Mom was worried about cognitive issues. Now I'm hopeful she just needed time to experience language.

You taught it, she learned it. This is what I call an exposure kid. I wouldn't worry--just keep doing what you're doing because it's working!

Yay! That's wonderful! Those are the kids that are so exciting to watch learn.

I had one special baby that literally took a year and a half to learn all of her letters and sounds (she was retained and stayed with me the 2nd year). But boy did we celebrate! And now she's rockin' it in first grade.
