Chant for sitting on the rug

I am looking for a chant for kids to get settled when they come to the rug to sit down.

Any ideas? Something with a little movement?

It is a tough year.

There are a few good ones here from Dr. Jean...

Do you have a SmartBoard? If so there are lots of movement ideas on GoNoodle. Some are good for getting the wiggles out while others (like yoga) are great for settling the kids down. You don't need a paid account for GoNoodle. There's plenty of great stuff for free.

I used to do:

Left foot, right foot, hear the marching feet

Left foot, right foot, marching down the street
Left foot, right foot, now we turn around
Left foot, right foot, now we all sit down

I used to do this one sometimes:

These are Grandma's glasses. Make "glasses" over eyes with fingers.
This is Grandma's cap. Place hands close together over head.
This is the way she folds her hands Clasp hands together.
And lays them in her lap. Place hands in lap.

These are Grandpa's glasses. Make "glasses" over eyes with fingers.
This is Grandpa's cap. Place hands farther apart over head.
This is the way he folds his arms Cross arms.
And takes a little nap. Place head on arms, as if sleeping.

(I reversed the order so they ended up with hands in lap)

I'll try to remember some others I used and post them. I had several and found that if I changed it up from time to time it got their attention better.

Just remembered another one.

Do the actions indicated by the rhyme:

Dance your fingers up,
Dance your fingers down
Dance your fingers side to side
and dance them all around.
Dance them on your shoulders, dance them on your head.
Dance them on your tummy, and put them all to bed! (put them to bed on the lap)

I got these online a long time ago and don't remember where they came from. If you google fingerplays you'll find many to look at.

Rhymes

We do this one with little finger actions, but often i just do a verse or two, however long it takes for them to be settled. We only rarely say the whole thing:

"Once upon a time in a nursery rhyme there were three bears.(click, click, click)
A Mama and a Papa and a wee bear. (click, click, click)
One day when they went walkin' and a-talkin' in the woods.
Along came a girl with long, golden hair. (click, click, click)

”Someone’s been sitting in my chair,” said the Papa bear.
“Someone’s been sitting in my chair,” said the Mama bear.

“Hey, Mama She Bear,” said the little wee bear, “Someone has broken my chair.”

Yeah!

“Someone’s been tasting my porridge,” said the Papa bear.
”Someone’s been tasting my porridge,” said the Mama bear.

“Hey, Mama She Bear,” said the little wee bear,”Someone has eaten my porridge."

Yeah!

“Someone’s been sitting on my bed,” said the Papa bear.
”Someone’s been sitting on my bed,” said the Mama bear.

“Hey, Mama She Bear,” said the little wee bear,”Someone is here in my bed.”

Yeah!!

Goldilocks woke up and broke up the party. (click, click, click)
"Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye," said the Papa bear.(wave hand)
”Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, ” said the Mama bear.(wave other hand)
"Hey, Mama She Bear," said the little wee bear, "Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye."(wave both hands)

Yeah!"

I also have memorized several A.A. Milne poems and will often recite one while the kids are coming to the rug. Keeps 'em listening!

Transition Chant

I use this one every time we transition at the rug:

1 - 2, Here's what we do...
3 - 4, Bottoms on the floor...
5 - 6, No talking lips...
7 - 8, Sit up straight...
9 - 10, Now let's begin!

By the time we're at 10, they should have listening hands and cannot switch spots.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 07:02 PM.
