Wanted Posters

I am doing a western/cowboy theme for Open House this year and I saw an idea of doing wanted posters with the students pictures on it and a list of positive things that the child is wanted for (Ex. being friendly, a good listener, great at math, etc.). My question is, do you think that wanted posers have too much of a negative connotation to them or do you think it is okay to do this project? I don't want to offend anyone but I th ink they may turn out really cute. Also, if you have any ideas for writing or art projects to go with this theme I would appreciate suggestions.

I think it's a great idea!!! You are keeping a positive spin on it, so I can't imagine how it would offend anyone. Being wanted can be a good thing!

I have seen it done using the Chicken Little story by Steven Kellogg. Youcould also use The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. I think it would be cute.

Great Idea

When I taught sixth grade, I did a figurative language unit. An issue of intermediate Mailbox had a wanted poster master. I copied it on tan paper and then we crumpled it up to make it look old. I took pictures of each kid and then they glued their picture on it. The students wrote similies and metaphors about themselves on the poster.
You could create a bulletin board title like:
"Wanted: Postive Third Graders"
"Wanted: Positive Behaviors"

Also, Carl's Corner has a lot of stationary related to this theme.

I would also find cowboy/cowgirl books that you could introduce the students to. Gail Gibbons has a book called Yippee Yay! that introduces students to the western theme. It would be a great book to start your year and theme. My third graders liked the story.

Wild West

This is my theme this year. If you e-mail me off board or PM me, I'll send you resources that I have created!

Also, I have some on my website too- http://www.teacherweb.com/mi/central.../mrsbainbridge
