Not Enough Time
Anyone else feeling like there's not enough time in the day with distance learning?

I have my kids from 9:00-9:30 where we listen to morning songs, alphabet songs, and introduce a letter of the day. I then see everyone in reading small groups for 25 minutes per group and math for 30 minutes per group.

Thats it. 1.5 hours of instruction a day, and that's being generous considering some of that time is morning songs for community building, greetings, etc. I'm feeling stressed out like they aren't learning anything. I have work posted for parents to do but it's optional since we don't grade, which means a lot of parents just aren't doing anything on their off time, even though I have 9 options of things do to like computer games, apps, worksheets, youtube videos to watch, family activities, etc. I havent even touched on SS or science because, quite frankly, I don't think they're as important ans reading and math and we don't even have enough time for those two things.

There's so many things I don't have time to teach and at this point, I'm just making a growing list of things that we'll need to catch up on after winter when we hopefully come back.

Our kids are on for a much longer time frame. They have a 15 min SEL followed by an hour of whole group (I am sure younger classrooms modify this somewhat- story followed by independant practice/activity), 1 hour for math, and small group on top of that. Plus they have a 40 minute special block for 40 every day.

What the expectations for students outside of that time? It would be hard to get even a part of what is needed in such a short time, but if they were working on activities to support that time, maybe....

I feel like there's not enough time coupled with way too much time on zoom. It's definitely a no win situation right now. I'm thankful that our school is requiring the independent work to be done and turned in. I think that helps a lot with making sure parents are following up on what we are doing. For now it's just paring it down to the absolute basics. Which is so sad because it takes away a lot of the fun stuff. But it's all we can do at this point. There's no way parents can replicate all of the little things they learn in the classroom, and we definitely can't replicate it all online.

I totally agree Sbkangas5, I personally feel like that's plenty of time on google meets. I don't want them on the computer staring at me for more than 1.5 hours, plus the other 30 minutes they get from their specialists. But on the other hand, I also feel like it's not enough time to do what we need.

I'm doing bare bones too but I'm worried we won't be coming back until January at the earliest, which only leaves 2-3 months left for learning. Right now I'm focusing on letter sounds, writing, and our numbers and shapes. I'm not even following our curriculum either since most of it is in-person activities like partner games.
