Check

Check out NJ Department of Education official website. In NY all you need to do is obtain your master's degree, earn a number of years of experience, get some PD hours under your belt, and, if possible, earn an extra certification.

Hq

I'm in NJ and I'm highly qualified in one subject and have certs for other subjects. The difference is that for the HQ subject I passed the Praxis test but didn't take the required credits/classes in that subject area in college. I've got certs for the other subjects because I took enough credits in addition to passing the Praxis. For what it's worth, in my district I don't think my HQ status means anything anymore - the admin. want teachers that have certs to teach those subjects.
