Reader's Workshop Share
I would love to hear what share time after RW looks like in your classroom. Do you pick the kids to share based on Guided Reading/conferences? Do you leave it up to the kids to see who wants to share? Do you have kids share who used a certain mini lesson skill or strategy? Is it more of a "share something you enjoyed reading about" thing?

I would like this time to be routine, but not stale or inauthentic. Any ideas?

Share time
In 4th , we use a few different ways. I'll announce at the beginning what we'll be sharing today and if it is whole group small group partner or how.

For example, when focusing on genre studies (I do have them all reading from the same genre) I might say, be prepared with a sticky note to share something about the main character of your realisitic fiction book or the next day describe the setting using the text evidence.

We're just begininning informational study, so I may have them share a really cool fact from their book or the main idea of a certain paragraph.

These all match the common core standards but they are reading their own choice RW books-we concentrate on genre though so that everyone will be reading nonfiction this week.

teaching point
I try to mirror the share with the teaching point when possible. However, every once in a while, we just do a Book Buzz where we can share about the book we are reading so that kids can write down title for future reading.

We are doing Historical Fiction about our Social Studies theme right now (Native Americans), so kids are sharing about the "real world events" that are part of their stories. This is fun because some kids are reading books that are about tribes other kids are learning about in their Social Studies research.

I always have my students share what they found in their "Just Right Book" on the skill that I just taught. They are always eager to share and it is a good indicator as to wheather or not they are using and understanding the strategy that was taught.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 04:48 PM.
