Vocab strategies

I need some vocab strategies that really help the kid remember what the words mean! Anyone have something that REALLY work? Wanting to do some planning for next year.

I teach 8th.

Word meaning

I think providing sentences using the words in a way they can relate to would help them understand and remember the word meaning. I would write 3-5 words for each sentence and then see if they could give me a sentence using the word.

Concentration/Memory

On one card put the word. On another card put a sentence with a blank or the meaning of the word. Depending on how many words and sentences/meaning there are, you might want to run the words on one color and the sentences/meaning on another color.

Students lay the cards in an array (maybe a five by four or six by four array) and turn over two cards. If the word matches the meaning card/sentence card, the student keeps the cards. If they do not match, they are turned back over and play continues. The person with the most cards is the winner.

Check out Marzano's work. The best way for kids to really learn is to connect meanings. Using different approaches helps to ensure they really get it. Games are a way to practice for sure. Illustrating and meaningful sentence work too. In 4th, we concentrate on Greek and Latin roots focusing on a root or suffix each week.http://www.altonschools.org/media/pdf/Marzano_Vocab.pdf
