Vacation Thwarted by Falling Trees
So, my DH and I have had our vacation planned since December. We found a perfect cabin in Pigeon Forge, TN and were going to drive up this Sunday with our dog to stay a week. I have spent the morning packing, only to receive a call from the woman who owns the cabin - a tree fell on it last night and we cannot stay there! She offered us another cabin (saying it is the only other available) but it is small and in a neighborhood! We had chosen the other cabin because we wanted to stay in the mountains! Not in a neighborhood! She doesn't want to give us a refund... What would you say in this situation? We don't want to drive 11 hours and spend a ton of money to stay in a neighborhood...

I'm bummed!

I would check into other cabins. There are so many in that area you should be able to find something. If you like B&B's there is an awesome B&B in Bryson City - Hemlock Inn. I have been there many times, it is quiet and near the Appalachian Trail.
Also, you should be able to get your deposit back since you did not cause this problem.

what a shame
She must refund your money since she can not provide what you agreed to. If you can't find another place (try, I would stay in another cabin but she should give you that at a discount since your choice didn't work out. At least you didn't drive out there to discover the tree. Good luck!!

holiday thwarted
Of course she doesn't WANT to give a refund, but if I was you I would politely demand it. You placed your reservation for that cabin and she can't follow through.

I would try to get the money back and take a different type of vacation, maybe closer to home and a different type of holiday style (city and go to nice restaurants/show or something). Maybe it would have to be shorter but I think if you went for her alternate cabin you would resent it while you were on your holiday.

(Of course if you can find a nice cabin in the woods from someone else, that would be great!)

Dog Friendly
So, I've set my DH on the refund mission and I'm looking for other places to stay. Part of the problem is that it has to be dog friendly - we have a 60 lb black lab and we don't want to leave her in a kennel. (We don't have children, so she is kinda like our kid.)

Every place I look at is booked for next week, so I started looking at other states. Unfortunately, my DH can't change his vacation time, so it's making for some slim pickings. Gosh darn it!

The site I mentioned has an icon to say if they allow pets. Good luck.

Don't forget to look at Craigslist and Ebay! They sometimes have awesome deals. Especially since it is such short notice. Worth a try!

I'm searching all your suggestions now. Thanks!

No question you should be allowed to cancel
w/o penalty. Accidents happen and it neither your fault nor the owners, but it is her property and if she can't get it up to habitable standards by the time of your visit than she has breached her contract. Simple and easy as that. Offering another place is a nice option, but that is not what your deposit or your reservation is for. Does your contract have any wording about the place you specifically rented or providing a place comparable? Because comparable in this case is another house in the mountains!

Good luck! Hopefully your DH works his magic and it's not a hassle!

Major Bummer
I hope you find a great place to go that turns out better than the original plan. At least you were not there when the tree fell!<!--eyebrow-->

Thanks for all your suggestions! We got a full refund and found a cabin in Ellijay, GA that is nicer and costs less! We've been to Blue Rigde/Ellijay on past trips and wanted something different this year, but I'm just glad we were able to find something dog-friendly so quick. :) <!--sunshine-->
