Understanding by Design

We are required to follow the book, Understanding by Design by Wiggins and McTighe for writing our lesson plans (as part of DA). Needless to say, these plans are very drawn out as the template in the book is several pages long.Does anyone have any experience with this type of planning? Hoping this isn't such a dreadful experience this year... Thanks!! ;)

I've used this type of plan

for organizing units of study, but not for daily plans. We usually work on the units of study as a team, and they usually last for several weeks. I can't imagine going to that much trouble for each and every lesson! Best of luck to you--it's going to be a long year!

I was trained on this earlier this summer. In my district, it is going to be used a way to think about a unit of study and key concepts for that unit. From this plan, we would develop our weekly and daily plans. The UBD plans is to be done as a grade level. More like a guide to make sure everyone understands the key information needed for to students to master concepts. This would be way too much work for each and every lesson.

I use them

to plan my units, then as a guide to build my lessons.

Thinking Process

To me, "Understanding by Design" is really about digging deeper in your teaching process to see if you're breaking it down enough for your students to get it. I'm attaching one of my completed units, which I was required to do for a class. My school does not use this template. But, I don't think they need to be so long and drawn out.

planning

Thanks everyone!!! I appreciate your help! Yes, we use this template for unit planning and last year we had to start with one subject of our choice. This year we will add another subject area. We did this with our grade level teachers. I can see the benefit of planning this way. If anyone has any other examples of plans to share, I would love to see them!! Thank you for sharing!

UbD

Does anyone use Treasures or Everyday Math and UbD? We have to put all of our lessons in UbD templates. Thanks.
