First Day

Well today was my first day with my students (Grade 2). I LOVED doing Morning Meeting with them (though I got one student's name wrong even with a name tag). They wanted to sing Peanut Butter, Grape Jelly ONE MORE TIME (I think we sang it 3 times).

The Interactive Modeling was great! They remembered how to line up after one IM.

And what can I say about Guided Discovery! We did crayons & pencils today. I've never seen kids so engaged & taking care of things. They sharpened the crayons ever so carefully & put them away carefully.

I was oh so impressed.

I'm so glad I found RC this year. I think it will make my year go ever so more smoothly. And thank you for all the advice over the summer (both mine & others) from those of you who have been doing RC for awhile now.

An aside: I'm exhausted from all the redirecting, reminding & reinforcing I did today, but it's a good exhausted!

Very inspiring. I'm starting RC also this year in grade 2. We don't start until Sept. 13. Here I am at 1:00 am, my head very busy organizing. What did you do for your interactive part of your morning message? I actually got out of bed because I was obsessing on figuring out how to get 22 kids to write and/or draw on the morning message at the same time. I can't remember what they said in the training.

Anyway, congratulations on a great first day. I hope mine goes well too!

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I think it is so important for us to remember all the great stuff that comes with RC and our teaching. we worry so much, and forget all the accomplishments we have to celebrate!

Here's to a great year with your Second Graders and RC!

On the first few days it is important to model how you want them to respond to the message. You need to decide the routine. Maybe to model, you can send them a couple at a time. Notice how . . . they are taking turns, thinking about what to draw, waiting patiently, talking quietly etc. Take it one little piece at at time. You'll be glad you did!
