Word families
I teach prek this year for the first time and have never done word familiies before, but I know other prek classrooms are doing them. (Previous years I taught the 3 year olds)

My kids are accustomed to my saying the onset and rime of words orally, without seeing letters. Consequently, now that I have added letters as of last month, they are saying the 3 sounds in a c/vc word, but then pause. A couple of kids can blend them all and give me the word, but the rest are waiting for me to say the onset and rime, then they instantly can blend the letters into a word.

How can I transition them smoothly to doing all the blending to make a word? Is it just a matter of perseverance and with enough repetition they will catch on, or what?

These kids are going into a school system where 47 percent of the 3rd graders flunked the 3rd grade reading test last year. Please, I don't know what these kids will be facing next year, and I would like to at least get them as far along in reading as I can.

letters and sounds?
I am teaching kindergarten, and if the incoming students are solid in naming the upper and lowercase letters, knowing the consonant sounds, and some of the short vowel sounds, they are in great shape.

Hearing the sounds orally is great reading readiness, as is hearing and understanding what rhyming sounds like.

If they can identify what they hear at the beginning, middle, and ends of words, they will be able to do beginning writing.

You are doing a great job! Keep building those readiness skills, and they will be successful in kindergarten. <!--valentinegirl-->

Don't worry about focusing on word families or phonics. Continue working on phonemic awareness and those oral skills. Here's the sequence (I know they are at the end of the blending part):

Blend compound words
blend syllables
blend onset and rime
blend cvc words

Yes, it just takes practice and repetition. If they have the first three they're ready to take on the cvc words.

Once they can blend each piece work on taking it apart. What are the two small words in a compound word? What are the syllables? Beginning sound, then ending sound, then vowel sound, then all of the sounds in a cvc word.

Ah, I haven't started with ending or middle sounds.

It sounds like you mean orally blending c/v/c words?? As in blending c and v and c, rather than what I've been doing which is c/vc blending?

That makes sense. Okay, I will start doing that. No written involvement, just stick to the oral.

By the way, to this point, I have done rhyming orally, eliciting the first sound in a word (orally), and blending c/vc words orally. This is the first time I have challenged them by showing them the letters and asking them to blend those letters into a word. Before that it was all oral. I can back off with showing those letters and leave that to the kindergarten teacher.
