Too late
 

Is it too late to begin the reader's workshop model now? I teach first grade and have a wide range of abilities. I think mini lessons and conferencing would be a much more appropriate way to meet their needs than using our basal which is too easy for some and way too hard for others. I'm reading Reading with Meaning and see that the lesson plans start in September. Maybe I should wait until next year to try it?

I don't think it's too late. Although they aren't exactly the same, I have heard of many people beginning Daily 5 in the middle of the year. You are right that workshop will meet your students' needs better. If you feel like you can get the materials you will need ready (like your classroom library), then I'd just do it. I don't think you will regret it.

Where to start
 

If I do start RW now should I begin with the plans for Sept. or pick strategies (skills) that we haven't covered yet. I've been doing some of the CAFE strategies and have the book Reading for Meaning as well as other RW lessons found on the internet.

Start now.. It will help you get your feet wet and you will be even more excited about September. I teach first grade too and started with Debbie's book. I love this model. Check out Kathy Collins Growing Readers ... all about first grade with sample mini lessons. If you need more resources let me know.

Readers Workshop
 

I started RW in the middle of the year so I say go for it. I think it is ok to start with the September lessons that deal with the procedures of the workshop. Have fun!
