How Would You Spend $100 on Social Studies

I am about to start my 3rd year teaching and I have not collected very many resources. I am new to teaching social studies in 6th grade. My school is allowing $100 for teacher supply lists.

I'd like to get some recommendations on teacher resource materials that you feel are important to have as a social studies teacher. Anything from your favorite social studies magazine/catalog, to an item that will be very useful when I'm carrying out lessons. I've thought about ordering 5 large inflatable globes...I imagine a cooperative game dealing with location, etc...

The curriculum here involves world area studies, so they'll learn about Europe, Latin America, Canada, the Caribbean and Australia.

Any idea's are greatly appreciated!

You might want to check your state and see if this is an option for you. The site is

These are great magazines that last from year to year. I buy several every year and now have a large collection. Many, many social studies themes.

I use Georgia Studies Weekly (not sure if it is the same as Social Studies Weekly) and I LOVE them. I am new to teaching SS for 3rd graders. And the "newspapers" are right along with out state standards. If they are not the same as the SS Weekly, try finding out if your state publishes something like it.

I really like Junior Scholastic. Wouldn't want to teach without it!
